10 Ways To Make Your Next Long Plane Ride More Bearable

Air travel can be long, uncomfortable and boring no matter how long your flight is.

Did you know the average flight is over 4 hours long? That's a lot of time to spend in a small space with limited options for entertainment.

And you're not alone if you find the whole experience to be less than pleasant. According to a study by Expedia, 61% of people find flying stressful, and only 38% actually enjoy it.

But it doesn't have to be that way!

I've put together a list of 10 tips to make your next long flight more bearable below - follow these simple steps and you'll be well on your way to having a comfortable and relaxing journey!

10 Ways To Make Your Next Long Plane Ride More Bearable

1. Charge Your Devices and Download Your Favorite Movies & Music Before You Board

You'll be grateful for the entertainment options once you're up in the air. Most aircraft will also offer in-flight entertainment for free or for a small fee. If you have children traveling with you, this may be easier than having to keep track of multiple devices.

Don't forget to check your headphone situation before you go! Are they fully charges and paired with your phone? Do you have the right adapter?

2. Bring Noise-Canceling Headphones

This will be a lifesaver if you're seated next to a chatty passenger, don't like the sounds restless children can make, or if you just want to block out the drone of the engines during your flight.

Traveling can also you somewhat tired and noise-canceling headphones can help you catch up on some much-needed sleep. Just remember to remove your headphones when the flight attendants come by so that you can hear them!

3. Dress Comfortably

You'll want to be able to move around and get comfortable, so avoid restrictive clothing like jeans or anything with a tight waistband. Instead, opt for leggings or joggers and a loose-fitting top. Don't forget to wear "the comfy bra" too! Nothing worse than uncomfortable jabs or pressure on a long flight.

Tend to get cold easily? Bring along a beanie, scarf, flannel shirt, or light jacket to keep you warm - airplanes are often quite chilly! If by chance you do get uncomfortable and don't have extra clothing to stay warm, sometimes the airlines will have pillows and blankets you can use for a small fee. Just ask the flight attendant and they will be happy to help you!

4. Stay Hydrated & Avoid Alcohol

The air inside the cabin is very dry, so it's important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Alcohol will only dehydrate you further, so it's best to avoid it altogether. If you must drink, stick to one alcoholic beverage and alternate with water.

You can purchase non-alcoholic drinks and carry them onto the aircraft after you've cleared security. Once you're on board, the flight attendants will be happy to get you anything else you need.

5. Get up And Walk Around when You Can

Sitting in one position for too long can cause your muscles to stiffen up or cramp, so it's important to get up and move around every once in a while. Take a trip to the restroom or stretch your legs in the aisle. Save a few desk stretches or yoga on planes poses to your phone for more inspiration. Just be sure to stay buckled in when the seatbelt sign is on.

6. Pack Snacks and A Refillable Water Bottle

This will save you money and ensure that you have something to eat if the airplane food isn't up your alley. Healthy snacks like nuts, seeds, fruit, jerky, and veggie sticks are all great options. Granola or protein bars can are a satiating option that can keep hunger at bay. And don't forget to empty out your water bottle before going through security! There are typically filling stations located throughout the airport where you can refill it after you're through.

7. Bring Along a Travel Pillow and Blanket

This will make it much easier to get comfortable and sleep on the plane. If you don't have a travel pillow, a small toss pillow from home will do in a pinch. And if you forget your blanket, most airlines will have them available for purchase or rent - though having your own is a great opportunity for a more sanitary experience.

8. Wear Compression Socks.

This is a great tip for those who are prone to developing blood clots or who have circulation issues. Compression socks help to increase blood flow and prevent swelling in the legs.

Even if you're not prone to swelling, sitting down for long periods of time can cause your feet and ankles to swell, so it's best to be on the safe side and wear them anyway.

9. Make Sure Your Carry-On Is Well Organized

There's nothing worse than having to rummage through your bag for hours to find the items you need to make your flight more enjoyable. Make sure everything is well organized and easily accessible before you go and become familiar with where each item is located.

A travel document organizer is a great way to keep all of your important papers in one place. You can also use packing cubes to keep everything tidy and easy to find. If you don't have that type of organizational storage, plastic baggies work, too!

10. Brush Your Teeth & Change Your Clothes to Feel Refreshed

This will help you feel more awake and alert after a long flight. Be sure to pack a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss in your carry-on so you can freshen up before landing. And if you're really feeling crummy, change into clean clothes after the flight to start fresh when you arrive in destination!

🐣 BONUS PARENT TIP: If you are traveling with children and need to keep them occupied, try wrapping some small items like crayons, books, games, etc. in wrapping paper (like a gift). Let them open 1 or 2 each hour and it will keep the activities "fresh" to help prevent boredom!
